A holistic overview of the impact of sulfur deficiency in pea facing water deficit

We report on the interplay between water deficit and sulfur deficiency, two constraints that are increasingly faced by crops due to climate change and low-input agricultural practices. In particular, we aim at better understanding the role of sulfur nutrition in the trade-off between seed quality establishment and plant stress tolerance in pea (Pisum sativum L.), a grain legume crop which has a pivotal role to play in both agroecological and food transitions. The effect of complementary irrigation on fruit growth, ripening pattern and oil characteristics of olive (Olea europaea L.) cv. Carolea

SummaryComplementary irrigation, 80 mm, distributed only during the third stage of fruit development, delayed ripening time and increased fruit size and oil content for fruits of the olive cv. Carolea. Prolonged water deficit reduced fruit growth, oil accumulation rate, K content of the fruit and enhanced ripening and pre-harvest fruit drop. Harvest time affected oil characteristics more than the water availability. Fatty acid composition was not affected by the water regime but polyphenol content increased and alcohol content decreased in the oil produced by irrigated trees.

The response of broad bean (Vicia faba) plants to water stress alone and in combination with green stink bug (Nezara viridula) infestation was investigated through measurement of: (1) leaf gas exchange; (2) plant hormone titres of abscisic acid (ABA) and its metabolites, and of salicylic acid (SA); and (3) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content. Some morphological, anatomical, physiological responses of different olive cultivars to high temperatures and drought stress

The aim of this work is to find relationships between morphology and physiology in three different olive cultivars: Biancolilla, Cerasuola and Nocellara del Belice, when plants were subjected to high temperature and drought. These cultivars are estensively used in Sicily for productive purposes. The four olive genotypes exhibited different responses to drought involving leaf drop and g s reductions (broad-leaved genotypes, good leaf hydration); or growth reductions (narrow-leaved genotypes, dehydration tolerance). Impact of vine water status on berry mass and berry tissue development of Cabernet franc (Vitis vinifera L.), assessed at berry level

Background Berry size is considered an important quality factor in red wine production. The objective of this work was to study the effect of vine water status on berry mass in field conditions, with a specific focus on berry tissue masses. Results The study was carried out over 2 years in a plot located in Sicily (Italy). Two irrigation treatments were established. Dynamic evolution of berry mass and berry tissue masses at harvest were recorded. Berries produced under water deficit conditions were smaller and characterized by a higher skin-to-flesh ratio. Mannitol-producing tobacco exposed to varying levels of water, light, temperature and paraquat

Transgenic mannitol-producing (+mtlD) and wild-type (-mtlD) tobacco plants were exposed to water deficit, varying light intensities, low temperatures, and paraquat applications to test whether mannitol was involved in protection against abiotic stresses. In the water deficit experiment, -mtlD and +mtlD plants were fully irrigated [100% evapotranspiration (ET)] or received 25% ET for 40 d. Water deficit reduced the relative water content (RWC) of both types of plant starting on day 22 and the total stem length (TSL) of -mtlD 25% ET plants after 11 d, whereas TSL of +mtlD 25% ET was reduced only after 34 d.
